Three Signs That Your Water Heater Is Going Bad

Your water heater is an important part of your home. It heats water to do dishes, wash your clothes, and even take a shower. It serves many purposes and is an integral part of your daily life. It is therefore important to understand the warning signs of a failed water heater. You might be able to spot a problem before it causes damage in your shower. These are the signs that it is time to replace your water heater.

  1. Lots of noise- If your water heater makes a lot of noise when heating up water, it could indicate that your heater is failing. It is possible that sediment buildup is clogging your water heater. To determine the cause, it is best for you to have your system flushed by a professional. This will allow you to determine if your water heater needs to be replaced or just maintained.
  2. Your water heater is old- A water heater that has been in use for 10+ years would be considered to be an older model. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it should be replaced immediately, even though it may be older. Your heater’s ability to perform its function is affected by sediment buildup over time. Your water heater will eventually fail because of the sediment that builds up in your tank. It is important to keep your water heater in good condition and have it serviced every now and again to reduce the impact of sediment. If the sediment is causing significant damage to your water heater, then it’s best to get a new heater.
  3. Water Color Changes – Another sign that your heater is failing, is water discoloration. If your heater tank is corroding, this means that rust is entering your water. The coating on tanks is designed to prevent corrosion. However, over time the coating begins to deteriorate, and rust forms. Although rust in water isn’t always harmful, it can cause damage to your appliances and make your water taste bad.
